RIVERSIDE, CA — April 30, 2009 — This June, the Riverside Transit Agency (RTA) will introduce a new way to get around Temecula. And best of all, it’s free.
Thanks to the RTA Board of Directors’ approval last week, the Temecula Trolley will debut on June 29 with service on two routes serving the Harveston development, Promenade Mall and Old Town. The nostalgic trolleys will provide a unique way to see the best of Temecula. Whether you’re looking for a lift to the mall during lunch break, a trip to the Temecula Farmers Market, or maybe a quick lift to school, then the Temecula Trolley is your ticket to carefree travel.
The Route 55 Green Line will provide weekday service between Harveston and the Promenade Mall. The Route 57 Red Line will provide weekday and weekend service between the mall and Old Town. Final design for the routing is underway and trolleys will run every 15 minutes. The service, financed entirely by the homebuilder Lennar Homes though an agreement with the City of Temecula, is designed to attract visitors and local residents, particularly within the development of Harveston, to utilize public transit as a means to travel to schools, retail and commercial centers and connections to other RTA fixed routes.
“This unique trolley service has the potential to change the way people think of public transit in Temecula,” RTA Chairman of the Board Karen Spiegel. “It also will allow passengers to enjoy a tour of this beautiful city and all it has to offer.”
In addition to serving Temecula’s popular destinations, the trolleys will eliminate the hassle of driving and could go a long way in reducing vehicle use during the busiest hours of the day.
Jeff Comerchero, who sits on the Temecula City Council and RTA Board of Directors, said frequent, reliable transit service offers residents and visitors alternatives to driving and helps reduce emissions.
“During a time of high gas prices and increased bus ridership, RTA is helping deliver more than just bus service to the residents of Temecula,” Comerchero said. “These trolleys will give residents and visitors more options for traveling around the city without a car.”
The Riverside Transit Agency provides public transportation for Western Riverside County, operating 39 fixed routes, 7 commuter routes and Dial-A-Ride service. RTA’s service area spans 2,500 square miles, the second largest in the nation.
