RTA UNVEILS NEW EXPRESS BUS SERVICE

Two new routes to connect Hemet/San Jacinto with Riverside, Escondido

RIVERSIDE, CA — May 1, 2009 — Looking for a better way to get to work, school or just around town? Then climb aboard Riverside Transit Agency’s (RTA) new express buses, debuting June 29 with limited-stop service from the Hemet/San Jacinto area to Riverside and Escondido.

With comfortable seating, rapid service and a low cost, there’s never been a better time to leave your gas- guzzler at home and hop on the bus. And best of all, the ride is free during the fi rst two weeks of service.

The Route 212 will serve San Jacinto, Hemet, Perris, UC Riverside, the Riverside Marketplace Metrolink Station and the Riverside Downtown Terminal. The Route 217 will serve San Jacinto, Hemet, Temecula’s Promenade Mall, the Escondido Transit Center and Escondido City Hall. The new routes are RTA’s sixth and seventh such express routes.

“Commuters have sent a strong message that they want a fast, comfortable and reliable way to get to work,” said RTA Chairman Karen Spiegel. “We are excited to deliver a service that meets our customers’ needs.”

Jim Ayres, who sits on the San Jacinto City Council and is a member of the RTA Board of Directors, expects positive results from the new express buses.

“This is a crucial service that will provide the residents of San Jacinto with improved access to work, shopping and other destinations, and in doing so increase the shift from the private car to public transportation,” Ayres said.

RTA offi cials expect the new express routes to meet the growing demand for bus service in Riverside County. Nowhere is that demand more apparent that on RTA’s CommuterLink buses, which are handling 12 percent more boardings than this time a year ago.

“We’ve listened to customers, cities, and businesses and are excited to have these new routes hit the road as ridership continues to rise and more bus service is needed,” said Hemet Mayor Eric McBride, who also sits on the RTA Board of Directors.

CommuterLink general fares are $3, day passes are $7 and monthly passes are $75.

The Riverside Transit Agency provides public transportation for Western Riverside County, operating 39 fi xed routes, 7 commuter routes and Dial-A-Ride service. RTA’s service area spans 2,500 square miles, the second largest in the nation.
