RIVERSIDE, CA — June 10, 2010 — The construction of the Corona Transit Center will take a major step forward next week when crews suspend a 56,000-pound pedestrian bridge to join the future transit center with the nearby Metrolink station.
The 80-foot bridge is scheduled to arrive at the two-acre site at 31 E.Grand Boulevard on Monday, June 14 around 5 a.m. Crews will then use a crane to hoist the bridge over the tracks and fasten it to 75 different points of contact on existing structures. The bridge installation should occur around 6 a.m.
Once complete, the bridge will provide Riverside Transit Agency (RTA) and Metrolink customers with safe and convenient connections between buses and trains.
The $6.5 million Corona Transit Center project includes eight bus bays, a covered pedestrian plaza and parking lot, as well as a stairway and elevator to the bridge accessing to the Metrolink station.
“This represents a major turning point in the construction of the Corona Transit Center, and reflects the fact that travel between buses and trains will be easier than ever before,” said RTA Chairman of the Board Jeff Comerchero.“Not only will the Corona Transit Center make travel more enjoyable, it will also provide an important link between our customers’ homes and their jobs, their schools, their medical appointments, and countless other destinations.”
Next week’s event has been more than five years in the making. RTA purchased land for the transit center in 2004 and construction kicked off in November, 2009. The Corona project, which is expected to be completed in August, is one of four new transit centers that have either opened or are planned for the region, including those in the cities of Perris, Riverside and Temecula. The Perris Station Transit Center opened in January.
The Riverside Transit Agency provides public transportation for Western Riverside County, operating 37 fixed routes, 8 express routes and Dial-A-Ride service. RTA’s service area spans 2,500 square miles, the second largest in the nation.
