ADA AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT | HOW TO BECOME ELIGIBLE FOR ADA PRIORITY SERVICE
RTA's Dial-A-Ride service is for seniors age 60 and above and for anyone carrying an RTA Disabled ID card or an ADA card. Use the instructions on this page to apply for the ADA card.

Thank you for interest in ADA Priority Dial-A-Ride service.  This page explains how to apply.  We strongly encourage you to verify that your home is within the Dial-A-Ride service area before applying. If you have any questions about ADA services, whether you live within the Dial-A-Ride service area or about Dial-A-Ride policies, please call (800) 795-7887.

How to Apply for ADA Priority Service

To apply for ADA Priority Service, you are required to fill out an online application at www.ADARIDE.com and have your physician or other medical professional complete a Healthcare Professional Verification Form. The application will ask detailed information about your disability as it relates to your ability to use fixed-route bus service.

To apply online, visit www.ADARIDE.com, create an account, finish the application and work with your healthcare professional to complete the Healthcare Professional Verification Form. If you are unable to complete the application online, contact ADARide at 1-877-232-7433.

Upon completion of the application and Healthcare Professionals Verification Form, a specialist will review your application to determine your eligibility based on one or more of the following criteria:

Category 1: The inability of an individual to use the public fixed route bus system without the assistance of another individual (except the operator of a wheelchair lift).

Category 2: The inability of an individual who needs the assistance of a wheelchair or other boarding device but cannot be accommodated on an otherwise accessible fixed route (e.g. vehicle’s lift does not meet standard or boarding/disembarking location is inaccessible).

Category 3: The inability of an individual to independently get to or from the bus stop.

Applicants receiving certification approval will be categorized under one of the following three types.

Unrestricted: An individual who cannot use the fixed-route bus system on a regular basis under any conditions.

Restricted: An individual who may use the fixed routes for certain trips but not others, or under certain environmental conditions and not others.

Temporary: An individual who, for a limited period of time, cannot independently use the fixed-route bus system.

Upon completion of the certification process, RTA will notify you within 21 days by mail regarding the decision made on your eligibility.

Appeals Process
You may appeal the decision if you are determined to be not eligible for ADA Priority Service or are dissatisfied with your eligibility type. A written request to RTA must be received within 60 days of the denial letter. Appeals should be sent to Riverside Transit Agency, P.O. Box 59968, Riverside, CA 92517-1968, Attention: RTA Customer Service Specialist. Simply submit a letter stating that you wish to appeal the decision and why you believe you should be eligible for ADA Priority Service. Attach copies of any other pertinent information. Once our office has received the appeal, it will be referred to an appeals specialist and an appeals interview will be scheduled. The appeal process should take no longer than 30 days and the recommendation is final. You may re-submit an application only if your condition worsens.

PLEASE NOTE:
• If you use a wheelchair, it may not be larger than 30 inches wide and 48 inches long and your combined weight with your wheelchair may not exceed 600 pounds, or we may be unable to accommodate your trip.

• RTA provides a curb-to-curb Dial-A-Ride service. Vehicles are not allowed to go into driveways and drivers are not allowed to leave the vehicle at any time.

• ALL RTA fixed-route buses are accessible to persons with disabilities. All buses are equipped with wheelchair ramps or wheelchair lifts. Audible announcements of major bus stops are made on all buses. ADA Priority Service is not available to those individuals who are able to use fixed route bus service.
